Replace stair tread covers, measure the width and length of each tread from top to bottom, and write them down. No two staircases are exactly alike, especially if the house is old and has settled over the years. Go to your local home improvement center and order tread covers.  Tarnish replacement treads to match the hardwood in your home. Brush the stain on with a brush and wipe excess with a soft cloth. Be sure to work with wood grain, not across it. Allow to dry according to the specs of the can. Sand lightly between coats and apply as many layers as you need to get the right color. Finish with polyurethane to seal the wood against scratches and scuff marks.

Cut back every old stair flush with the riser with an electric jigsaw. Sweep up sawdust and wipe down with a damp cloth. Use construction adhesive on the back of the lower stair tread covers. The glue comes in caulking tube and is easy to use. Assemble the tread of the old staircase and pressure for 30 seconds. Finish by hammering in finishing nails at 3/4-inch from each edge. Skip to the next staircase, working your way up until you reach the top.
