Journalism and its quest for news have had an impact on American history, helping to write about the events that shaped our country into what it is today.

One of the most compelling events is the story of two Washington Post reporters Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward. Their determined efforts to expose the Watergate scandal involving a break in at the Democratic headquarters helped to bring down the most powerful in the country at the time, Richard Nixon. This piece of journalism history shows the strong check and balance it can have on government. Is this new to you? Catch up here

Another compelling piece of journalism history is that of the television show “Sixty Minutes.” This show laid out the modern standards for investigative journalism, looking into and exposing various problems throughout society. One of the shows most famous reporters was Andy Rooney, whose reports became extremely popular for their biting yet compelling in their nature. He has become an icon in American journalism.

These stories have one thing in common: a thread of integrity and hard work that exposed stories to keep the public informed. They gave their best effort to bring wrongs to the surface and entertain at the same time, making a mark on history.

Day to day and year after year, the news is one of the most definitive platforms that help shape, change, and transform American culture and society. The stream of iconic and symbolic images that we see on the news, coupled with a running commentary, analysis, discussion, and debate, is the perfect demonstration of a democratic society at work. The news is information, and in America, unlike in other countries, there are no limits or restrictions on information; freedom of the press is alive and well. Whoever controls the flow of information, controls the power of the news. The representation of the news is every bit as powerful as the actual news. This is why it has the ability to change the American political and social landscape.

At the same time, how the news is brought to the general public has changed over the years. Information that used to be limited to radio and television now has different outlets. The Internet and other social media platforms can stream news more quickly than ever before; the information is raw, and sometimes false, but these sources keep the news fluid. How information will be presented and processed in the future is anyone-s guess.

You used to be able to pick up a paper and know what you were reading was fact. Today, with all of the different types of media available, everyone has to have their say in the news. You never know if what you are reading is someone else’s view or if it is a strongly researched story.

There are too many people reporting news today who are not putting the time in that is required to report information in a respectable and responsible manner. There are too many people who report the news who want to think they are professionals but really just paid amateurs.

Being a news reporter used to mean something. In an age where communication was not as readily available as it is today, reporters were relied upon to get information to public. The stories were well researched, well written and very informative. The nation relied upon reporters for information and the reporters with the information took pride in their work.

Today, anyone with a computer can be a news reporter. Blogs are everywhere and information is everywhere. A person can get information off of one blog and add it to their blog if choose to do so. There are advantages to having access to information just like there are disadvantages. If you are going to report the news do it in a professional manner and report just the facts.

The lost colony was the first English attempt to colonize the New World, now known as the USA. Sir Walter Raleigh was granted a patent to colonize as much of the New World as he could. He sent two explorers, Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to scout the coastal areas that are now North Carolina and Virginia. They landed on Roanoke Island. They returned to England with favorable reports. Impressed, Raleigh gathered a group of soldiers, scholars and craftsmen. They sailed off to colonize Roanoke Island. The colonists arrived too late for planting crops and their food ran out. When Sir Francis Drake arrived in 1586, the settlers abandoned the colony and returned home.
Raleigh was disappointed by the abandonment but determined to establish a colony. He sent 117 settlers who landed on Roanoke Island in July 1587. Governor John White returned to England for supplies. England’s war with the Spanish armada delayed his return until August 1590. He found the colony plundered and deserted. The colonists were never found. It is believed they may have joined the local Indians or been taken captive by them. Later, there were reports of blue-eyed Indians in the area to support this theory.
